Superbowl Sunday 2010 ride - It's your heritage DORBA -- START TIME AND LOCATION HAS CHANGED
START LOCATION AND TIME HAS BEEN CHANGED !!! The river bottoms and levee are surely a mess with recent weather, it's not even worth trying to do that ride at this point. NEW route below: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3451182 Start at Mockingbird DART Station at 1:30pm. Meet either at Trinity Hall for pre-ride smack and lube, or in the ground-level parking area east of the station (free). Ride will be a few roads and the Katy Trail, 5.5 miles of easy cruising, downhill on the way to eat and a slight uphill grade on the return. Eat wherever grabs you, then start back by 4 or so, we'll work out the details once we assemble before the ride. Sorry kids, but the levee will be a mess and I'm just not into getting to the restaurants dripping crud. Bring a lock.
Location
We are interested, but i'm so sick of wet and mud! I'm gonna just hang and see what the conditions are...............
Might need a road route this year, just sayin!
WE were in LBH yesterday, which is usually an indicator for the levees, it was a mud fest with no, or little sun this week it don't look good. Road route indeed.
I hear ya Paul. I drove by the powerline at RCP today and you could sail a Sunfish up that way pretty easy with the right winds.
OK, and I really hate to do this, but here is Plan B:
http://www.greaterdallasbicyclists.com/specialevents/superbowlsunday.html
I know, I know, it goes against the grain of most of you to ride with the roadies, but what could it hurt? Wear your colors, if I elect to go this route I'll start from RBM in Richardson. The GDBers aren't all that bad, really, they are mostly pretty nice folks, the decal-sniffers will be up the road and we won't have to deal with all that much carbon fibre.
Or, a possible Plan C, would be to just ride to downtown from Bachman. I don't know a good route, anybody with ideas please feel free to pipe in.
Plan D: Start at Mockingbird Station for DART. I've been to downtown from there a time or two, we could find our way. Can you say Katy Trail? Can you say "ON YOUR LEFT YOU POOFY-HAIRED IDIOT TEXTING AND DRAGGING YOUR LAPDOG!" I know I can.
At this point, not willing to capitulate to the weather gods, I'm open to suggestions.
i believe we need plan right now for a road ride of some sort. I just listened to the news and there is 48 hours of rain expected between wednesday and friday. I vote RBM as a starting point. What time?
I'm in for plan d. Not really a big fan of ridin w/ the roadies, especially alot of em.
I got a nice 10 mile route that basically circles uptown and highland park areas but that wouldn't take very long unless its windy...
I'm up for any routes within under 25 miles
Starting from the DART station at Mockingbird is good for me, I can ride the train down.
I'll make a decision Friday based on the input I get from you, my fans, and the stinking weather.
I'd ride with the roadies, they don't bother me, but I don't know their route from RBM. I'd rather just ride with you people, my fans. YOU PEOPLE!
I got a great route form DART to down town.
The Katy trail is nearby Mockingbird Station and there is a safer route (not mockingbird) that goes through some of SMU, down Airline to the north trail head. From there it's smooth sailing down the trail all the way to Victory. From there you have, Dealy PLaza, the west end, downtown, Deep Ellum. From there you can head up past Baylor and the Swiss are back up behind Greenville and then back to Mockingbird.
Or... something else altogether.
Actually, it sounds like a nice bike pub crawl route.
That's my route
Man - just stick with Bachman Lake -- overachievers can hit up Club Schmitz at noon, and you can always take Denton to Maple to Revechon to the Katy Trail to the West End.
(Or, go with the Trinity Hall / Mockingbird Station route, but I've done that route so many times, I was looking forward to a little change-up.)
OK, I'm the daddy, I'll have to be the decider. Right now I'm leaning toward Mockingbird Station and I'm thinking about riding the route today for recon. I'm gonna prolly do McMillan down to McCommas to the Katy and then Houston into the West End.
I hate to disappoint anybody, I'm pretty bummed about the conditions in the river bottoms, I really like riding the levee but I fear it is a mess. I like the Mockingbird Station start because I can ride the train to there real easy. Now, it's not all about me, so y'all keep piping up with suggestions, but right now it feels like 5-6 miles from Mockingbird is the most centrally located start and most direct route. Sorry if that puts anybody out, but we gotta start somewhere.
No problem - Trinity Hall is actually a lot closer to my house than Club Schmitz; I just haven't been to Schmitz in a while.
Now that we're starting so close to my house, I'm more likely to get the wife to go, anyway.
As Solo suggested, you can always come back an alternate route so it doesn't feel so much like an out-and-back. (Plus there's a lot of beverage choices along Henderson / Greenville Ave.)
Hey - maybe next year the Rail Station by Schmitz'll be open (Green Line).
I'm gonna prolly do McMillan...
Oooohhh... gouge out my mind's eye...
(shivers)
Back on topic...
Maybe a "kid friendly" phase one and then another group can take their time getting back up Greenville while the others meander on back up to the station?
Looks like I am in.
Suggestion for Daddy SC - What about WRL - (from DART or new DBW) down to the Boathouse. Then up Lakewood Blvd through neighborhood across Gaston to Coronado(?) - goes through Lakewood CC to Brookside to Sante Fe Street to Sante Fe Trail. Get over to Exposition to Main to west End. I've done this route many times.
It is a low traffic route.....probably 13-15 miles one way. Take another route back.

OK, this is what you get for opening your mouth. You lead it from there, It's the DORBA way/curse. I can get off the rail at WR Station. Easy for moi.
I'm riding from either there or Mockingbird, some elemental doubt but I'll work it out. The reason I say that is I went to Mockingbird Station and rode the Katy from there today and ran into some old friends, DORBA people from the old days. OMG ... I'm sitting near the Katy by the old Coors sign and the former location for Baby Doe's, having a cold one, and who do I see riding up the pavement (past the blockades) but Climb On and some other people I know. That's Karma, people, what are the odds? I saw these guys on Uni's going up the road and I knew immediately that was Mark and Darrel. Then here comes Candy and some guy (I can't remember his name) and we had a big reunion.
Wow, it was way cool to see you Hot To Trout. Weird, bizarre, impossible. But way coolishness, what are the odds? I was just wondering the other day what ever happened to that gal. HEY Kelli Kelli Kelli, you still out there? Candy asked me and I said I thought I had seen you post in the last couple of years.
What at beautiful day for a bike ride with the poofy-hairs and normal people. What are the odds?
It's ON. Sunday.
Be there or be square.
Humor me. You are talking about two seperate routes that do not meet till West End correct?
What time to leave Mockingbird Station if that is a route? Where is The Katy Trail from the Station? Hey I'm from Denton alright?
Deflated is trying to being along another group (bike hashers) that will be "pre-lubing" at Trinity Hall (Mockingbird Station) and both lines converge there so maybe the official start should be from MB Station? It is a very nice ride from WR station to MB station however via Trammel, University, etc. The two groups can meet up at MB station and then head down the Katy.
Getting to the Katy from MB Station is pretty easy if you take SMU blvd across 75 over to Airline. Airline intersects with the north trailhead of the Katy Trial. It would not be fun to try to get a group across the Mockingbird bridge at 75.
Deflated is trying to bring along another group...
That, and the fact that there's not much else to do waiting at White Rock Station or the future DBW / former PT's parking lot unless you went down the block (on Walling) to Jake's.
HEY Squirrel Cutter
It was awesome running into you too after all these years! Dick an Darryl and the etc etc's are usually out on Tuesdays Thursdays.....I agree what are the odds....hope to see you again soon! So you riding from Mockingbird for SuperBowl? I'll text Dick with whatever you plan and maybe we can hook up again at Baby Doe's!
Kelly Kelly Kelly you out there???

Funny tried to type in Mark's last name and it comes up **** too funny! guess Dorba thinks it's a 'dirty' word...hmmmm maybe it is!
Found my 'Smut Ride' shirt that John McCaulley made....Super Bowl Sunday might be a perfect outing for it!

OK, I think Mockingbird Station is it. If Solo knows a better route than what I rode yesterday, we'll follow him. I might be up for a little prelube, but I'm thinking a 1:30pm start is sounding better since it's only about 5.5 miles of easy downhill from there. I have no idea where I want to eat once we get there, I'll see what everybody else wants to do.
I'm gonna try to get on the levee on Friday just to have a peek, but I expect disappointment.
Pista - MS about 1:30 work for you?
Candy - that was fun running into you kids. Mark must be like county, it don't get past the filter. m-a-r-k or (c)-o-u-n-t-y, wussupwiddat? Mark is a dirty word to some people I know
I'll post up Friday night with updated instructions, I see there is also another group starting from up north. I don't want to split up my group, so I'm backing one starting point. The ground-level parking area east of Mockingbird Station, at this point. I can't make everybody happy with whatever we do, I just hope we can get a group and make an appearance in the West End.
Anybody riding in from Richardson?
Z and B&f - you guys out there?
OK, I'm letting go of the idea of riding the levee. There is no way the river bottoms will be useable by Sunday with the current batch of rainy weather. I'm not even gonna waste the gas to drive over there on Friday.
We ride from Mockingbird Station, and I'll even push the start time back a hair for people who might be coming after attending church. 1:30pm start.
In.
I'm way overdue for something like this. Pista, tell me where to meet you for the ride down.
How about - Richardson riders meet at R Heights Rec Center at 11:00
Go Saints!
I like it. See you there.
Out.
OK 1:30 Mockingbird Station. I'm riding my mountain bike since this is a casual ride.
Driving in from Denton. Leaving from The Bicycle Path parking lot at 5 after noon. Corner of Lillian Miller and I 35 behind Jack In The Box! I have a crew cab pickup if you want to carpool.

Will there be a stop for "Boosumss?" along this crawl? It is after all Superbowl Sunday, gotta have a neked lady bar in the mix, somewhere.
I'm trying to gather the Denton area folks for this ride. I hope we represent riders that ride around here even though all the dirt trails are closed.
No TT bars, not for me anyway, I haven't done that in years. In fact, John McCauley was probably the last guy I went into a tittybar with. Years ago on a TdS ride.
Hope everybody makes it out Sunday, easy ride, we can have a few beers and argue about politics and Ain'ts vs. Colts. Who dat? Might actually be a pretty good game ... #1 and #2 D, #1 and #2 QB. Interesting matchup perhaps. And nobody is in jail or busted for shooting at anybody yet.
For those who ask, I plan to ride with the group leaving at 1:30 from Mockingbird Station to West End, eat, and ride back planning to be back in Denton long before the football game begins. Time will depend on who is riding with me from Denton. I still have room in my truck.
I'm there. I'll be riding in from the train as my church is close to the down town Garland station, and my friend is going to most likely be driving there along with his 2 sons to meet me. We will try to keep pace with whoever shows up, but if his younger son happens slows us down, we'll just back off and let u guys do your thing. I know that area like the back of my hand. Rode it quite often back in the fall. Where specifically are we meeting at Mockingbird Station? just in the parking lot? or somewhere nearby?

Aints huh? Get a life goofy MF!
In, Dad and I will be there maybe early if we can get out of bed. I'll be breaking in the new brooks

If you get there early, just go to Trinity Hall -- Solo and I will prolly be there by 12:20 or so. (After 12pm you don't even have to order food in order to get beer on Sundays.)
If'n you get there closer to 1:30pm, I'm guessing it'll be pretty obvious where everyone is.
In + 1.

Enjoyed the ride and company. Lost Chuck somewhere along the way but we all thought he would be able to find his way home. I'm not sure if we failed as followers or if he failed as leader. Maybe he will fill us in. There was a little drizzle but not to bad.
yeah thanks for the ride guys. i enjoyed it. i split off to the east end of downtown when u all went to eat.
Yeah, that could be a FAIL. I hung out up there by the Coors sign for a while, it was actually kinda cool, I've never explored that little bluff before.
I got some sleet on the way home, toes were frozen, almost took the red train instead of the blue.
Good times.

I guess he won't be calling them aint's no more.

One week away. More rain predicted for later this week. I'd bet it is a muckfest down there right now, anybody with current intel please post up. I'm gonna go do a recon, probably Friday, and check the route. It will be muddy, especially where we have to get down off the levee to get under bridges and stuff.
I remember one of these rides many years ago where we had to cross the roads from the levee. I think that is the same year we got kicked out of the Spaghetti Warehouse for being too muddy. Good times. Being the muddy Pigpen kids used to be our rep, back in the day. It may be too cool to sit outside at some of the eating places, we'll just have to wait and see, but if it ain't raining we go. Come out prepared for anything.
I'll post up next Saturday on conditions. If we have to ride the levee most of the way then so be it.
